Gantt charts have been a standard tool in project management for many years. Kanban boards may have replaced Gantt charts in many businesses, but they are still very important to project managers. Nearly every project management platform has them — including Trello. However, there is a small caveat.
Trello users might think that the service has Gantt charts. This presumption is based on the fact you can view your boards in a timeline. But it isn’t a Gantt chart — it is more like a calendar on steroids.
Trello’s Power-Up adds Gantt charts and features such as:
- Drag & Drop to schedule tasks,
- Automated or manual workflows,
- Advanced work breakdown structures,
- Dependency links,
- Customised views,
- Artificial tasks,
- Sort and group cards.
Let us demonstrate how to use Trello’s Gantt chart feature.
What You Will Need
To add Gantt charts to Trello, you will only need a Trello account. This is it. Let’s get to work and take your project management to the next level!
How To Install the Power-Up
You don’t need to pay for a premium Trello plan, as the Power-Up is available for free.
- Log in to Trello and click on the Power-Ups button to install the required Power-Up.
- Click Add Power-Ups in the Pop-up menu. Type BigPicture into the search field.
- Click on Add to install BigPicture to Trello. Then, when asked, click Add again. The pop-up window will close, and BigPicture will be ready for use.
BigPicture: How Do You Use It?
Click on the BigPicture entry in your toolbar. Then click Allow in the popup to agree to the license. A new window will open. Scroll down to the bottom and click Allow. Click on the BigPicture once more to open the Gantt charts associated with the current project.
BigPicture may take some time to load after the first launch. You’ll soon see the “Yay! It’s coffee time!” window. Click Ready to Work in that window.
BigPicture will automatically open with a default chart based on the cards you have on your board.
First, you might want to change the colour of your chart’s bars. To do it, click the button next to the corresponding task (three horizontal dots), and then click the colour square you wish to associate with it.
